Go

Go

Go was the outcome of Bruce's years spent in Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990s. Named for the ancient board game he watched day laborers play in an Osaka warehouse, it documents a Japan that has nothing to do with the postcard version: Yakuza, bosozoku bikers, day workers, the homeless, right-wing nationalists. Shot in black and white with his characteristic close flash, the images reveal how violence and hardship run beneath the surface of uniformity in both cities. It is one of the great photographic investigations of a place by an outsider who refused to stay on the surface.
